Brandenstein was pilot for STS-8 (August 30, – September 5, 1983) the third flight for the orbiter Challenger and the first night launch and landing. During this mission the crew tested the Canadian-built Remote
Manipulator System (RMS). During the seven day mission, STS-51G (June 17 – 24, 1985), he commanded the crew on the Discovery deploying four satellites and retrieving SPARTAN.
