John Kulm is a cowboy poet, reciting original and traditional poetry for audiences throughout North America. Cowboy poetry is a cultural expression of ranch families and workers; a form of entertainment for people living in lonely, isolated regions. For anyone frustrated by the economy and world events. For the person who used to farm or whose family “used to.” For anyone struggling with grief and anxiety. Takes life on with the calm temperment of a person of the land. John says, “It’s not just a collection of poems. I wanted the poems to tell a story. Matching them up to the five stages of grief made that happen.” John uses modern performance poetry to paint a picture of farm life
John Kulm is a cowboy poet, reciting original and traditional poetry for audiences throughout North America. Cowboy poetry is a cultural expression of ranch families and workers; a form of entertainment for people living in lonely, isolated regions. John Kulm’s background involves two things: raising hay, grain, apples and cattle on his family’s farm, and working as a stage performer and poet. He’s recited poetry in comedy clubs, falling in with a bunch of stand-up comics and “squandering years in nightclubs to learn about working audiences.” John draws on a wide range of material to present what he describes as a show with just a bunch of laughs.”

John decided to give up on farming. He explained, “I still had a little money left, so it seemed like a good time to quit.” The poetry John wrote about farming at that time came from a need to sort out the feelings he had about leaving, and it became his first book.
