Steven F. Wille, B.S.B.A., M.B.A. Most decisions are accessible and have very few long-term consequences. Other decisions are life-changing, and there is no going back. Picking a technology platform is an example of a tough choice that locks you in for the long term.
Project managers often use a decision matrix with numerical scores to make the process objective and logical. This is essential but not sufficient.
A swarm of 10,000 honeybees provides a model of how to make a life-changing decision by a network of intelligent beings. They won’t make it through the winter if they pick the wrong location for their next home. If they don’t find a home within three days, they all die. Bees travel a 30 square mile area seeking out holes in trees and other objects, looking for the perfect home. They return to make a group decision.
We will examine the decision process and other ways to make a great decision using the collective intelligence of the people affected by it.
