Carlton Green, Ph. D.’s influence is credited with a dramatic, top-to-bottom turnaround in the attitude, morale, and self-esteem of the institution’s food service department and staff.
Dr. Carlton Green has worked in student activities, multicultural services, residence life, academic affairs, athletics, and counseling services in public and private institutions.
Dr. Green is the Diversity Training and Education Director in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. While building collaborative and empowering relationships with students, faculty, and staff, he has always sought to advocate for institutional policies and programs that promote access and equity for underserved populations.
Dr. Green relies on his first-hand experiences with and knowledge of diversity issues in higher education and mental health settings while respecting the unique perspectives of those requesting consultation. He understands that addressing diversity and justice issues in any organization can be emotionally challenging, and he works to ensure that all participants’ voices are heard and validated. Most importantly, he seeks to promote a strengths-based appreciation for diversity, especially among individuals who experience divisive and damaging issues.
Dr. Green has advised countless student leaders and student organizations and developed and executed campus-wide retention programs as a Student Affairs administrator. As a mental health professional, he specializes in providing culturally responsive treatment, training, and supervision. In addition, as an Instructor, he has developed and implemented culturally inclusive curricula for mental health trainees.
Dr. Green earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and received masters-level training in Mental Health Counseling and Pastoral Ministry. He has provided clinical services to diverse student populations.
Dr. Green’s dedication to diversity and inclusion facilitated his appointment as the Multicultural Post-doctoral Fellow in Counseling and Psychological Services, the country’s second most racially and ethnically diverse institution.
Dr. Green served as a Staff Psychologist at the UMD Counseling Center, providing psychotherapy, consultation, outreach, supervision, and training services. His work was acknowledged at the local and national levels. At UMD, he was honored with the Division of Student Affairs Outstanding Service Award and the Champion of Our Community Award by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Staff and Faculty Association.
At the national level, he was recognized as a Diversity Scholar by the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies, and he served as an invited keynote panelist for the 10th Biennial National Multicultural Conference and Summit.
Dr. Green has developed and presented workshops on addressing racial trauma in mental health treatment at George Washington University, Gallaudet University, American University, the University of the District of Columbia, and Texas A&M University.
Dr. Green was a featured guest on the Strange Fruit podcast, discussing racial trauma and mental health. He is a member of the historic Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA, where he provides mental health counseling, outreach, and referrals to church members.
Dr. Green is an active member of the American Psychological Association through the Society of Counseling Psychology and the Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity.
