Dave Logan, Ph.D. (Organizational Communication) specializing in creating great workplace cultures supported by vibrant strategies. Dave’s business is business culture.
His work is based on a 24,000-person study recently published as Tribal Leadership: Leveraging Natural Groups to Build a Thriving Organization, which reveals a ten-year, 24,000-person study that shows corporate leaders how they can use their tribes—the groups that naturally form within any company—to maximize productivity and profit within their own firms.
The success of a company depends on its tribes, the strength of its tribes is determined by the tribal culture, and a thriving corporate culture can be established by an effective tribal leader. His work with leaders to employ their companies’ tribes to maximize productivity and profit.
Leaders, managers, and organizations that understand, motivate, and grow their tribes will succeed in an increasingly fragmented world of business.
“Dave is one of the most energising academics I have met. His work on Tribal Leadershipis accessible and inspirational and can directly be picked up by management at all levels across complex and large global organisations such at TNT.”
“Dave’s recent program about Tribal Leadership at Qualcomm drew an enthusiastic crowd of managers, directors and vice presidents. I have received so many positive comments from people who felt Dave really connected with them. They liked his presentation style and said they learned useful management tools. Some managers have even formed a discussion group called “Tribal Leadership” to share ideas and principles introduced by Dave and to bolster their management skills. It’s definitely one of the most engaging presentations my team has experienced.”
“Dave‘s presentation at our annual leadership meeting ignited a dialogue about collaboration and leadership that continues to this day. Their clear and engaging description of the Tribal Leadership model encouraged our leaders to look at organizational challenges through a new lens. They offered simple suggestions for leaders to move their organizations to the next cultural stage, and increase employee engagement and performance. Today, it is common to hear about an organization described as Stage Two or Three and the actions Dave’s suggestions are being implemented and discussed.”
“When I first heard Dave describe the Five Cultural Stages he had identified, the world became much clearer to me. Here was a description of individual and group behavior that reflected with much greater clarity the world we live in! And here was a model that everyone who heard the explanation identified with – instantly. The Cultural Stages map [the basis of Tribal Leadership] has been an invaluable tool working with high performing professionals and clients. It enables us to set the bar at new heights and quickly and positively influence behavior to seek and reach the new bar.”
“Dave Logan is an inspirational and engaging speaker. His five culture stages have been a thought provoking breakthrough for our organization as we strive to be a global, seamless and integrated, service provider. His highly interactive talks and teachings on Tribal Leadership have helped to ‘redefine what is possible’ for our people and organization as a whole.”
“Dave Logan’s presentation was spot on! Dave really took the time to learn about our company and build his presentation to fit our needs. We are a company very focused on creating and maintaining a culture where our employee like what they do, where they do it, and who they do it for. Dave presented to our entire company at a time when our company was going through change at a tsunami pace and we needed to be reminded of our sacred flame and cultural map! Our employees truly enjoyed Logan’s presentation and were re-engergized and re-engaged and are looking forward to keeping our sacred flame burning bright! Thanks for the lift, Dave!”
“The impact of Tribal Leadership programs are nothing short of amazing. After one exposure to the ideas, people use the words on a daily basis. After several exposures, people lead and manage in different ways, and get better results. I find myself using the core values discussion as a way of grounding the conversation in what is important. It helps put some of the “noise” in the conversation in perspective. I use it when facilitating board retreats as a way of grounding the members in something they share. It helps move the rest of the agenda along, particularly when we come to some “prickly” issues. We just reflect back to our shared values and noble cause. By listening to colleagues you can tell when they are in stage one or two. Providing feedback and coaching them about the stage they are in and and the power they have to move up a stage can be a valuable role of a leader or a friend. Sometimes the only way to move “up” a level is to move “out” by changing your position or employer. Thank you to Dave for the impact you’ve made.”
“Thanks for coming as our guest speaker for the Children’s Specialists Inaugural Leadership Seminar. Your presentation was inspiring, motivating and thought provoking. You brought to life many of the principles from your Tribal Leadership book and almost two months later, there is still a “buzz” and sense of excitement in the air here at Rady Children’s Hospital as a direct result of your visit. Your discussions with our Board of Directors and small group sessions prior to your presentation ignited our leadership teams for Children’s Specialists, Rady Children’s Hospital as well as UCSD. You amazed us with how clearly you understand and can explain complex issues, and the timing of your visit couldn’t have been better with the transformational discussions our three organizations are having about becoming world class and providing world class health care for all children. We used your model outlining the “Five Components of Tribal Strategy” to guide us at our recent Summit meeting where we were able to identify our noble cause and articulate our values and the outcomes we want to achieve.”
“Dave was part of an executive education faculty session done in Lisbon, Portugal, both as a session leader, and as a standout member of a distinguished panel. In formal evaluations from the participants, they remarked on Dave’s ability to provide clarity to confusing and complicated concepts, his natural energy, and turning ideas into actionable steps that moved us toward greater collaboration and profitability.”
“Dave Logan spoke to a large group of executive leaders at the University of Southern California to present the concepts on Tribal Leadership. The audience was truly captivated by David’s highly charismatic, quick-witted presence – They found him to be extremely credible and knowledgeable, and appreciated how effectively he was able to help them connect the concepts to their current workplace challenges which is a real gift. Above all, these executives overwhelmingly reported the relevance and practical solutions offered made this one of the best sessions we have ever hosted. They’re still talking about it!”
“Dave Logan made a presentation on Tribal Leadership at the Lusk100 Annual Retreat. Lusk is the Center for Real Estate…and the members include senior management of a variety of real estate development companies, financial institutions involved in real estate, public officials and academics. Dave’s presentation was well received, extremely informative and quite timely. He clearly brought t some new cutting edge thinking on corporate management and leadership, which was timely for an industry going through a major transition.”
“Dave Logan presented Tribal Leadership to my Vistage group of CEOs who gave him all top marks for content and delivery. Dave demonstrated clearly how organizations REALLY function as tribes. As a result, my members are having a values conversation with each key employee to understanding THEIR values, recognizing through Dave’s lively, bold, interactive and energizing presentation that doing so will raise employees’ level of engagement in the company which will generate team and dramatically improve results. They are committed to having at least stage 4 companies! They can’t wait to have Dave back for the next upgrade to their strategic planning processes.”
“I would have to say the interest factor in the room was amazing. You managed to capture every single member of your audience and keep their attention throughout the entire presentation. The concept was unique and something that many of us had not encountered before, and it seemed to have a lot of validity as to how people interact and socialize. You gave very easy to follow steps on bringing these concepts back to the workplace and getting employees more engaged and moving into new areas of engagement within the organization on an individualized basis.”
“As a nonprofit child welfare agency, staying connected to our “noble cause” is critical, particularly in challenging economic and social times. As an agency who has experienced much growth in the past few years, and a change in our founding leadership, Tribal Leadership was just what we needed to reinforce what we are all about, where we are strong, and how we can maintain and strengthen our core values and culture as we continue forward. “The feedback on Dave Logan’s session continues to be outstanding, weeks after the event. Managers are still talking about it–its practical application, and Dave’s enthusiastic and interactive presentation. This was a home run.”
“… Museum leaders in our executive development program saw “Tribal Leadership” as the Rosetta stone for interpreting (and fixing) organization culture.”
“Dave Logan has taught at NCSL’s Legislative Staff Management Institute, a senior executive training program for the last four years. He is a dynamic, humorous, insightful, highly interactive instructor who gets extraordinarily positive ratings from our participants. While his research is rooted in the private sector, he intuitively understands the management world of government and non-profit leaders. He is truly exceptional and speaks to the dilemmas of leadership at all levels.
I highly recommend him as a speaker, a motivator, a thinker and a scholar.”
