Gene is one of the country’s premier comedy writers winning three Emmy Awards and one Writer’s Guild Award for outstanding comedy writing, and has been his head writer for the last decade.
Gene began writing comedy for nightclub performers and others. Eventually, television producers heard of Gene’s comedy skills and he began writing was followed by staff assignments,” head writing chores for “The New Bill Cosby Show,” and several freelance writing assignments for some of our classic television shows.”
When Carol Burnett retired her show, Gene went on to produce “Welcome Back, Kotter,” “Three’s Company” — the number one rated show at the time — and “The Tim Conway Show.” During his first year in Hollywood, Gene was contacted by his boyhood idol, Bob Hope, to write Bob’s monologue for the Academy Awards telecast of 1969. Through his contact with Bob, Gene has written jokes for every president since John F. Kennedy.
Gene traveled with Bob Hope at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II to write the Command Performance Show at the London Palladium on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation.
Gene Perret is the only writer to travel with the Bob Hope USO Tour to the battlefields of Beirut (1983), the Persian Gulf (1987), and Saudi Arabia (1990) to entertain the military troops stationed there. Gene also travelled with the Bob Hope USO Peacetime Tour literally around the world to celebrate the dismantling of the Berlin Wall at locations including Moscow and Berlin.
Gene has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense and awarded a medal and Certificate of Esteem for patriotic service in providing entertainment to members of the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
