Jason L. Thomas: On the morning of September 11, 2001, just outside of New York City, Jason Thomas was informed that a plane struck the World Trade Center Towers.
Having recently left active military duty, Thomas quickly put on his Marine uniform and drove the twenty-five miles toward the crumbling Towers to help.
Along with another Marine, Thomas presented a plan for a search-and-rescue mission of the area and tried to enlist additional volunteers on-site to help.
While others felt the mission was too dangerous, the two Marines were determined not to sit idly by and watch. Carrying little more than flashlights and an infantryman’s shovel, they climbed the scalding ruins calling out,
“United States Marines. Is anyone out there?”
Eventually hearing a response, the two Marines dug ceaselessly into the burning and twisting rubble to find two men, police officers, injured but alive.
His heroism is so remarkable that his actions are depicted in the 2006 movie, World Trade Center directed by Oliver Stone.
The Thomas family was the feature of a special 2-hour episode of ABC’s hit television show Extreme Makeover: Nominated for an Emmy.
