TRAINING IS LIKE A BATH…WE TAKE ONE BEFORE WE THINK WE NEED IT!
Training/Speaking/Motivation are all wonderful parts of our professional development. In fact, they are the reason I became a professional speaker. I learned so much from each and every speaker I ever heard. I was with an international company for years and they brought speakers in continuously. I look back and realize what “gifts” I took from those speakers. They did all the thinking and processing and all I had to do was add it to my own repertoire. I loved what they did for me personally and professionally. They taught me life skills that I carry and try to pass on today! I am so grateful to them all. What I’ve found in talking with people are underlying myths that are generally incorrect when considering using outside speakers and training.
One such myth is that training is not necessary when all is going well. Au contraire, using outside training and speakers, when all is going well, will affirm, support, and extend the wellness already in place. It’s just a BIG PLUS. Like a bath, waiting until something smells is probably a bad approach!
Another common myth about regular ongoing life skills training is that one training class on, say, customer service or sales or communication does the trick. In fact, it simply opens a door that too often is closed right after the event. Repetition is absolutely the key to tying that common thread to eventual successful application. Most of us don’t “buy into” any information we hear for the first time…it merely gets us thinking. We need to build on that great start. What should happen when a program is well received is that it should be followed up with more. It’s like opening a bank account, making a deposit, and forgetting it exists. More and more companies have begun requiring 24 to 40 hours annually in elective training classes to keep their people open and cutting edge in their thinking.
PEOPLE ARE OUR MOST VALUABLE ASSET IN THE WORKPLACE. When we challenge thinking with outside speakers and programs, we lend credibility to company messages, we sharpen affirmations, bring awareness to issues earlier, and provide positive energy that gets deposited right back into your organization. I find audiences to be open and hungry for knowledge and ideas they didn’t have to think of first. I find people relieved when they can affirm to themselves what they’re doing right and privately sort what they can do better. I believe in people, potential, and the personal power to win at work and win at life. I hope you do too! Winning is contagious! Embrace the opportunity to pass it on! Build the people and the people will build the business.
