For the person who used to farm or whose family “used to.” For anyone struggling with grief and anxiety. Takes life on with the calm temperment of a person of the land. John says, “It’s not just a collection of poems. I wanted the poems to tell a story. John Kulm is a cowboy poet, reciting original and traditional poetry for audiences throughout North America. Cowboy poetry is a cultural expression of ranch families and workers; a form of entertainment for people living in lonely, isolated regions. John Kulm’s background involves two things: raising hay, grain, apples and cattle on his family’s farm, and working as a stage performer and poet. He’s recited poetry in comedy clubs, falling in with a bunch of stand-up comics and “squandering years in nightclubs to learn about working audiences.” John draws on a wide range of material to present what he describes as a show with just a bunch of laughs.”
John decided to give up on farming. He explained, “I still had a little money left, so it seemed like a good time to quit.” The poetry John wrote about farming at that time came from a need to sort out the feelings he had about leaving, and it became his first book.
