Marlene M. Maheu, Ph.D. is an ethicist; her areas of expertise include risk management: legal/ethical, standard of care, clinical protocols, authentication, informed consent, community-building, and the nuances of malpractice insurance for remote practitioners.
Her consumer-oriented topics include wearable and sensor-based technologies for behavioral care; how the Internet of Things is already changing healthcare; artificial intelligence, machine learning, and affective computing; behavioral “apps” and how to evaluate for validity, reliability, user experience, and other essential factors; hardware and software product development and marketing.
Dr. Marlene Maheu was Chair of a subcommittee at the American Psychological Association to examine Internet issues.
Her interest in the legal and ethical aspects of using technology led to invitations from no less than seven established publishers after speaking at the APA’s annual meeting. Those invitations launched her subsequent focus on legal and ethical risk management related to clinical interventions mediated through technology.
Dr. Maheu has served on a dozen professional association committees to assist with developing telehealth standards, guidelines, and other consensus documents.
She has published 43 book chapters, journal articles, and five professional books related to telehealth practice.
Dr. Maheu has served more than 55,000 professionals from 109+ countries. As an ethicist, her areas of expertise include legal/ethical issues in developing health, telehealth, telemedicine services; healthcare and technology; Internet consumer issues, and online patient education.
