Peter D. Berardi, Ph.D., U.S. Navy SEAL Commander ret., developing leadership and team practices to build cohesive and more effective organizations. A career Naval Special Warfare Officer (SEAL) he retired from the United States Navy, having deployed overseas 7 times and conducting exercises and operations in over 30 countries worldwide.
He was also a 9/11 First Responder arriving on scene at 1 WTC, as the only Navy SEAL to have been at both the Pentagon and Ground Zero on 9/11.
On 9/11/01, he was working in Crystal City, VA when the United States was attacked by terrorists. When the Pentagon was hit he ran to assist but was prevented from entering the immediate area by Secret Service personnel. When he approaching the Pentagon site he also called a friend (Firefighter) who was a member of the NYFD. I asked Firefighter if I could help and was told they could use every man they could.
Pete told his Commanding Officer he needed to get up to NY and was told to “Get up there!…we’ll take care of the paperwork!” Pete arrived at Ground Zero at approximately 1600 / 4:00 P.M. and was assigned to a six-man team. His team was the first to enter the subway path below WTC1 and also the first team into the underground garage adjacent to the West Side Highway (below WTC1).

Pete earned his Ph.D., in Public Service Leadership, his doctoral dissertation is titled: Examining the Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Authentic Leadership in Naval Special Warfare Leadership. “The Path: Achieving Full Potential Through Self-Knowledge”.
Pete has a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master’s degree in Defense Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School; and a Master’s of Military Science form the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College.
Pete serves as a Research Consultant for RAND Corporation, is a Senior Fellow and Adjunct Professor: Sciences Executive Education Program.
