Rhoda D. Zagorsky, the summer from Hell. I was seen by many specialists and had many tests performed including a bone marrow biopsy, which was most painful. They were checking to make sure it was only a kidney problem. I had very little energy and spent much of the time lying on the couch…
Presumed Consent” (where people are assumed to agree to being organ donors after death unless they have specified not to) could greatly ease the organ shortage here.
Unfortunately, the need for the “Presumed Consent” law will only increase in the near future. For example, those who have taken the drug Lithium for manic depression are finding, after a number of years, that their kidney function is starting to fail. Youngsters who are taking medication for attention deficit are at risk for decreased liver function. There are already 93,218 people on the transplant waiting list. Where will the organs come from to meet these skyrocketing needs? Presumed Consent needs to become law!
I propose that the United States enact this law as soon as possible. Every year 6,000 more people in America alone die while waiting for an organ.
What better and more lasting legacy can you leave for your fellow man than to be an organ and tissue donor!
