- Detective John Munch on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
Richard Belzer plays the acerbic Detective John Munch on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, after first portraying Munch on NBC’s critically acclaimed drama series Homicide: Life on the Street for seven seasons.
Belzer has made history by portraying Detective Munch in nine television series, including Law & Order, The X-Files, and Arrested Development.
Due to his “uncontrollable wit,” Belzer was politely asked to leave every school he attended. He honed his life experiences into barbed comedic material from other former jobs, including teacher, census taker, jewelry salesman, and dockworker.
His captivating, often hilarious debut blends fact with fiction as his off-camera persona comes to life on the page. Using his renowned comedic voice, Belzer takes audiences behind the scenes of his life and the show, highlighting the curious convergence of reality and celebrity.
Belzer began his career with a starring role in Groove Tube, the counterculture film that became a cult classic. Since then, Belzer’s talents have been employed off-Broadway (The National Lampoon Show with Bill Murray, Gilda Radner and John Belushi), on radio (Brink and Belzer on WNBC).
Many films, including Fame, Scarface, Man on the Moon, The Bonfire of the Vanities, and The Big Picture.
Belzer starred in his HBO comedy special, Another Lone Nut, and the six-part Showtime comedy series The Richard Belzer Show.
He hosted the primetime special When Cars Attack, the live Lifetime talk show, Hot Properties, and Court TV’s Crime Stories, and produced and hosted The Belzer Connection, a series of conspiracy-theory prime time specials for the SCIFI Channel.
