Rodrick Walters is a motivational speaker, entrepreneur, author, and award-winning poet. The principles essential to success in life. Known as a business philosopher, he shares a thought-provoking message of hope and inspiration.
During his early years, Rodrick developed a bleak outlook on life, since he struggled in just about every imaginable area. An average student, he developed a speech impediment which caused him to stutter. This impediment, along with his already low self-esteem caused Rodrick to become withdrawn and almost made him give up hope of achieving anything meaningful in life.
While studying at the University of Texas at Austin, he was on the verge of being dismissed from the University because of poor grades. It was then that Rodrick began to realize that he had always allowed the perceptions and opinions of others to dictate the direction of his life. He discovered that any level of accomplishment must first begin within an individual, not with the thoughts of others. He set out to prove that with strong will and determination, he could prove others wrong and accomplish the seemingly impossible—graduate from one of the top business schools in the world and go on to a successful career. At that same time, he set a goal to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) by age 25.
After this fundamental change, he witnessed a dramatic turnaround in his scholastic performance and his overall approach to life. He graduated with a Bachelors of Business Administration degree in Accounting and went to work with the prestigious Big 4 accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche, becoming a CPA, one month before his 25th birthday.
As a CPA, Rodrick enjoyed a relatively successful career; however, he felt strongly that he needed to share his story with others to enable them to become high achievers in life. He began documenting original motivational quotes to share with friends and collegues. Then he developed the art of writing poetry that shared thought-provoking, life-changing messages. He won the Editor’s Choice Award for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry, for his work, There’s Too Much at Stake.
In the mid 1990s, Rodrick began sharing his message of hope and inspiration with small groups whenever the opportunity became available. Since 1998, his workshops for organizations—ranging from business and social organizations to educational institutions.
He suffered a major setback in late 2002 when his marriage ended in divorce. This tragic event caused him much emotional and financial damage. He had to start life over with very little assets and what he describes as “a mountain of debt.” He jokes today that “creditors had me on speed dial.”
Before long, he realized that this challenging situation was simply another opportunity to put to the test the principles that had guided his life over the past several years. He began to implement these same principles and again saw a dramatic turnaround in his life. He recovered from the setback and became even more convinced that he had to share his message of hope with others.
Audiences are impressed with his story of overcoming so many obstacles to become the talented communicator. Rodrick is not only a motivational speaker but is also a motivational doer.
