We have all felt the frustration of dealing with a co-worker whose conversations consistently focus on the negative.
Strategies for responding to whiners at work.
When that certain co-worker approaches you and launches into his or her latest lament, here is what you can do.
Use the strategies below that are most comfortable for you.
1. Set Boundaries: I can give you my full attention for about 15 minutes, then I really need to get back to work.
2. Find out what they need: Before you continue, I need to know whether you want me to just listen or do you want my suggestions on what to do?
3. Empathize: I know it has been hard for you. You have had to work twice as much since the staff cutbacks.
(Note: Often, people will continue to share the same concerns over and over until they know that you have heard them and understood their pain.)
4. Positive reality check: I noticed that you mentioned what bothers you about this situation. I wonder what the lessons or blessings might be.
5. Encourage constructive action:
What are your options on how to resolve this?
What do you think you will do about this?
Who do you think might be able to help you?
NEVER dismiss the feelings of the other person with comments like you should not feel that way or it is not that bad.
You are entitled to feel the way you do. You are entitled to decide how much of a role you want to play in assisting them.
