There, he was a four-time Gold Glove winner, the 1974 National League MVP, played six seasons with 200 or more hits, batting .393 in ten All-Star Games and was the 1974 and 1978 All-Star MVP. He also played a Major League record of 193 consecutive, errorless games at first base. In addition, Garvey has a lifetime career batting average of .294 and a .996 fielding percentage at first base, which is the Major League-best. In 1983, Garvey joined the San Diego Padres.
The most dramatic moment in his baseball career was his ninth-inning, game-winning home run in the 1984 playoffs, which propelled the Padres toward the National League Pennant.
He is also highly acclaimed as a motivational speaker, traveling domestically and internationally.
